Matt, RickMKK, seberhart - thanks a lot guys!
One of the key ingredients in the Fiscus style is environment I guess, so I made a different version:
It takes a while to learn this style, but it's very rewarding. The biggest problem is, that you never use the same set of tricks for two different photos, but here's some general guidelines:
1. Dodge and burn!! This is the most important step I guess. Learn how to 'paint with light'. Go to DPReview and search for 'paint with light' or 'pwl' and pay close attention to what especially cspringer has to say
2. Sharpening with high-pass. I like to do extreme sharpening in general - to the point where it becomes more of an effect than actual sharpening. Mask out any unwanted stuff.
3. Blur the highlights. To give a really smooooooth look, try to blur some of the highlights. I picked this up from Andrzej Dragan (very similar to Fiscus).

thats a point that you should consider too
the overall effect is quite nice, but you've flattened the face too much and made some "dirty" bumps into his face, you can see this pretty good on his right (or the image left) side of his face, right below the cheekbone, there is a dark spot that looks pretty out of place (or on top of his right eyebrow too). You shouldn't use dodge and burn that much, it burns out the colors too much, which is pretty much wrong. Try to use it in some small spots not for the overall effect, you could paint the shadows with the right shadowcolor instead, and do the same with the light, and then overlay them or use softlight instead you'll get a way better and more natural result.

Yeah neox - you're right. I'm still learning to pwl and don't claim to have it under my belt at all!
Another thing is - 'natural result' - I'm not entirely sure that's what I'm aiming for. In this style I like it to look a little bit 'painted'
A guy in another forum challenged me to do another, so here's my latest:

looks cute, but the shadow around his shoulder does not fit in this composition. leave it away.
..and yeah and make your own illustrated tutorial, so i can compare with the proceeding of my masterpiece. i should also put a background in. one colored bg's looks boring, esp. simple black or white. thats the trick.
